Abstract:

Photographs of the immediate family and descendants of Horatio Putnam Livermore of California, and particularly of the family of his son, Norman Banks Livermore, Sr. and his wife Caroline Sealy Livermore. Includes many studio portraits and snapshots of family life, leisure, and travels. Some views of family homes on Russian Hill (San Francisco), Rockridge (Oakland), Montesol Ranch (Napa County), and Ross (Marin County) are present. Early portraits include a daguerreotype of Elizabeth Slater Livermore and her sons Charles E. and Horatio P. Livermore, taken in Boston, circa 1854, several portraits of Horatio Gates Livermore (1807-1879) and Elizabeth Slater Livermore (1809-1892) and numerous cartes de visite portraits from studios in Virginia City, Nevada, where Charles E. Livermore lived in the 1860s. One unidentified daguerreotype is likely to be Horatio Gates Livermore, age 45-50. Of general historical interest are 3 stereographic views (STER) and 1 carte de visite view of Virginia City in the 1860s by Lawrence and Houseworth (PIC Box 4), a group portrait of Charles Livermore's "Goose Club", friends in Virginia City (PIC Box 1), a photographically reproduced seal of the club (ALB v.1), a studio portrait of a Native American man (possibly Northern Paiute) in a feather headdress (ALB v.1), portraits of Queen Emma of Hawaii and Queen Pomare IV of Tahiti (ALB v.1), several other collected portraits of notable people and performers, and several portraits of Chinese people (ALB v.1-2). One image of Booth & Co.'s "horizontal engine", photographed by Eadweard Muybridge, is included (PIC Box 4). Also present are portraits and views related to the Livermore brothers' Yosemite trip of June 1866, including a large-format group portrait by Silas Selleck (B Box) and a similar carte de visite (ALB v.1), and a group portrait of the same party in Yosemite Valley (ALB v.2). (This party included George Bayley, Josephine Warner, F.P. McMahon, and Theodore Smith as well as Charles and H.P. Livermore.) Several cartes de visite views of Yosemite attributed to C.E. Watkins are present (ALB v.1). A set of five photographs documents San Francisco's newly completed Swedenborgian Church (PIC Box 4). Noteworthy portraits, in addition to those of immediate family members, include several photographed by Arnold Genthe of sitters Anna Head, Joseph Lilienthal Jr., Ruth Haas Lilienthal, and Isabella Lilienthal, among others (PIC Box 2 and AX Box). Mattie Banks Livermore's portrait album (ALB v.2) includes portraits of distant relations and associates, including those connected via Mattie's sister, Lily Banks Bredon. Among those pictured are Sir Robert Bredon (customs official in China: see also group portrait in B Box), Sir Arthur Edward Kennedy (1809-1883) and daughter Georgie (Georgina Kennedy), and Meade family members, including a baby picture of Richard Charles Meade (presumably later Lord Gillford). Another noteworthy album is that of Edith Livermore (ALB v.3), with pictures from her London marriage to Alfred Hurtgen, and life in Dresden and Berlin, Germany, at the outbreak of World War I.
